Easy Games to Add to Your Routine during National Train Your Dog Month

For many, January is a time for beginnings, fresh starts, and resolutions for improving over the next year. For dogs, January is National Train Your Dog Month.

No matter how old your dog is, training should be an ongoing part of every stage of their life. It shouldn’t end just because they’re no longer a puppy! Training builds trust and confidence.

Here are some fun, easy ways to make training a part of your everyday routine:

Breakfast Brain Games

  • Turn their morning meal into an exciting enrichment game with puzzles and slow-feeders. These simple tools provide mental stimulation by getting your dog to use their brain to get food.

  • As a bonus, sprinkle a couple of treats into the mix to keep them guessing!

  • Leaving your pup with us? Add an IQ treat ball or ask us to put their meal in a slow feeder.

Walk & Work

  • While walks are already amazing sources of enrichment, daily walks can also become instant training sessions! Practice “heel,” “stop,” and “sit” in between sniffing sessions.

  • Don’t forget to reward your pup with plenty of treats and praise. Yummy treats reinforce good behavior and keep your dog from looking for snacks on the ground while you explore.

Dinner Etiquette

  • Asking your dog to “sit” and “stay” before eating is a great way to make them feel like they are getting an extra special reward for their good behavior.

  • Our four-legged best friends love to make us happy! Practicing even a few tricks right before their feast will have them feeling a champion.

Bedtime Chill Session

  • Dogs thrive on routines. Practicing winding down each night can create a peaceful routine that helps them know when it’s time to relax and get ready for bed.

  • Ask your pup to “lay down” or “settle” before letting them get into bed. Snuggling is the ultimate reward!

  • Our handlers can provide bedtime stories and lavender treats to soothe your pup while you’re away.

Wag Hotels’ #1 Tip for Successful Training:

Remember, consistency is key. Dogs are always looking to their humans to know what they can expect. By maintaining a routine and rewarding them for good behavior, they know exactly what you’re looking for!
